A practical college move-in timeline

That advice is particularly relevant when a fixed campus appointment or lease date gives the family little flexibility.

Raleigh and Triangle college move-in directory

Use these official pages as the starting point. The student’s portal, email and exact building instructions still control when they differ from a general public page.

School dates, routes and public pages can change after publication. Recheck the student portal and official housing email within 48 hours of arrival.

NC State University move-in

NC State’s current fall 2026 move-in period is August 13–16. From August 13 through August 15, students use appointment-based residence-hall check-in during the primary daytime period. On August 16, check-in is available without an appointment during the posted hours. The university explains that the one-hour appointment is the period in which the student should arrive and check in; it is not a requirement to complete the entire unloading process within one hour.

Students should use the route published for their specific residence hall rather than following an ordinary campus GPS route. NC State Transportation publishes building-specific directions and identifies longer-term parking areas to use after temporary unloading. Check-in locations also differ among communities; some halls use a service desk or another nearby building rather than the lobby of the assigned hall.

The student should keep identification and the assignment information readily available. Families should bring their own hand truck or cart and protect bedding and other soft items from rain. NC State also advises students to coordinate purchases with roommates and to use labeled, stackable containers.

Do not assume every NC State hall has the same elevator access. For example, the published hall pages show that Gold and Turlington do not have elevators, Wood has a service elevator rather than general passenger-elevator access, and Tucker has an elevator. Room dimensions and furniture also vary by building. Residence-hall beds are generally Twin XL, while Wolf Village and Wolf Ridge use full-size beds.

Current NC State housing rules prohibit or restrict numerous items, including open-flame devices, certain cooking appliances, portable heaters, personal air-conditioning equipment, halogen lamps, hoverboards and some motorized devices. Students should use the current official list rather than a generic dorm-shopping article.

First-year students are generally required to live in university housing for their first two semesters unless an exception applies. Transfer and graduate students may apply but are not subject to the same general first-year live-on requirement.

For spring 2026 move-out, non-graduating residents were required to leave within 24 hours of their final examination and no later than the published closing time; graduating residents received a later deadline. Future closing dates must be rechecked because they are tied to that year’s academic calendar. NC State offers summer housing and certain break or transition options through separate applications and fee structures.

Meredith College move-in

Meredith’s fall 2026 new-student move-in is scheduled for August 15. New students receive an assigned morning arrival time, enter through the designated Hillsborough Street gate and are expected to know their residence hall and room. The current instructions allow a short unloading period before the vehicle moves to longer-term parking, and Meredith recommends bringing a dolly or cart.

New first-year, transfer and commuter students complete in-person check-in steps that may include obtaining the CamCard, completing the housing contract and receiving a room key. Returning-student instructions may differ and should be confirmed through Residence Life or the current student portal.

Meredith publishes room descriptions and dimensions for its residence halls. Standard residence-hall beds are identified as standard twin rather than automatically Twin XL, so families should check the exact room page before buying bedding. The Oaks serves upper-level students under a housing model that differs from a traditional first-year hall.

The public information reviewed does not provide a reliable, comprehensive elevator inventory for every Meredith residence hall or a universal policy for professional moving companies. Families using movers should send the building name and ask Residence Life whether commercial crews may enter, where the truck may stop and which entrance should be used.

Meredith permits first-year students to have cars, subject to registration and parking-permit rules. Its housing FAQ also specifies approved electrical practices, including the use of UL-listed surge protection rather than ordinary multi-plug extension devices.

Current 2026 end-of-year move-out instructions were not found on a public current-year page. Residents should rely on information sent through MyMeredith and Residence Life rather than older move-out pages that remain searchable.

Shaw University move-in

Shaw’s current fall 2026 housing page lists separate arrival periods for student leaders, resident assistants, first-time and transfer students, returning students and approved athletic, band or leadership groups. Returning-student check-in is limited to the published daytime periods, with no weekend or after-hours check-in under those instructions.

Before move-in, a student must complete the required housing application, receive financial clearance, register for classes and satisfy immunization requirements. Shaw also uses a “Golden Key” communication to indicate that required enrollment steps have been completed. A student who has not completed the necessary processes may be unable to receive a residence-hall assignment or move in.

Shaw’s housing policy generally requires students who are under 21 and have earned no more than 90 credit hours to live on campus unless they qualify for an exception, including an approved commute from a parent or legal guardian within the stated distance. The current policy should be reviewed directly because individual exemptions and student circumstances differ.

The official housing information gives different reporting addresses for particular halls, so a family should not enter only “Shaw University” into navigation and assume it will arrive at the correct check-in point.

Published room information says rooms include basic furnishings such as a bed, dresser, desk, chair and closet or wardrobe. The university also publishes representative room dimensions and prohibits personal cooking appliances in residence-hall rooms, while providing microwaves in designated hall areas.

Current public pages did not provide a complete fall 2026 unloading map, post-unloading parking plan, elevator inventory, cart policy or commercial-mover-access policy. Those points should be confirmed directly with Housing and Residence Life before a professional crew is dispatched.

Saint Augustine’s University move-in

Saint Augustine’s offers on-campus housing and instructs admitted students to submit the enrollment deposit before completing the housing application. Housing assignments are handled through Residential Life and Education.

The university’s public housing help center should not be used as a reliable source for a current 2026 move-in date. At the time of review, it displayed a “Fall 2024” heading with dates that do not align correctly with the calendar and also contained older 2021 room-selection and move-out material. The page says that current move-in and move-out instructions are sent to residents by email, posted in residence halls and discussed during closing meetings.

That means prospective residents should contact Residential Life directly for:

• The current arrival date and time
• The correct check-in building
• Financial, registration and health-document clearance
• Parking and unloading directions
• Elevator and stair information
• Cart availability
• Guest or helper limits
• Early-arrival procedures
• Professional-mover access
• Current prohibited items
• End-of-year closing and summer options

The university states that keys are issued to the assigned student rather than to a roommate on the student’s behalf. Residents should also avoid propping exterior residence-hall doors and should document identifying information for valuable electronics.

William Peace University move-in

William Peace provides several traditional campus residence halls and university-affiliated housing. Its housing policy generally requires first-year, sophomore and junior students to live on campus or in approved university-affiliated housing.

The university publishes unusually helpful building details, including furniture, room measurements, bed sizes and elevator information. Elevator access varies: the published hall descriptions identify elevators in Bingham, Finley, Davidson and Ross, while Frazier does not have one. Beds are generally Twin XL, but families should verify the particular room assignment before purchasing fitted items.

At the time of this research, the public move-in page still displayed 2025 dates. Those dates should not be carried into a 2026 article. Residence Life should provide the current schedule, unloading instructions, parking route and key-pickup location.

The existing instructions state that students must resolve applicable Financial Aid or Student Accounts holds and be registered before receiving a housing key. That administrative principle is useful, but it should still be reconfirmed for the current term.

The public information reviewed did not establish a current universal policy for carts, commercial moving crews, after-hours arrival, move-out or general summer housing. Contact Residence Life at the current official contact listed on the university housing page.

Wake Tech student housing

Wake Tech does not operate traditional dormitories or residence halls. Students arrange their own housing in the Raleigh area.

That changes the entire moving process. There is no campus key-pickup period or residence-hall unloading route. Instead, the lease and the apartment or landlord control:

• The date possession begins
• Whether the apartment is furnished
• Utility responsibility
• Parking permits
• Gate and building access
• Elevator reservations
• COIs
• Move-in deposits
• Roommate liability
• Trash and recycling
• Move-out inspections

Wake Tech’s locations are distributed across Wake County, including Southern Wake, Scott Northern Wake, RTP, Eastern Wake, Western Wake, Perry Health Sciences and Public Safety campuses. Students should identify the campus where most classes will occur before choosing an apartment solely because it is advertised as “student housing.”

A lower advertised rent may not be a good value if the student faces a long daily commute, limited transit or a parking arrangement that does not fit the class schedule. Wake Tech provides campus parking information and regional transit resources, including eligible student transit options.

Professional moving or storage can still be useful for a Wake Tech student who is moving into an unfurnished apartment, changing leases, relocating between Wake County communities or managing a gap between housing dates.

Duke University move-in

Duke uses different processes for first-year, transfer and returning students. First-year move-in for fall 2026 is August 15, with assigned arrival windows connected to the student’s residence hall. The university says students should not arrive outside the assigned period because East Campus traffic capacity and volunteer availability are limited. Transfer-student move-in is August 17, with check-in through the designated West Campus housing office.

The broader fall housing calendar lists separate opening periods for East Campus and upperclass residence halls and apartments. Returning upperclass students therefore should not assume that the first-year East Campus instructions apply to them.

For transfer arrivals, Duke provides temporary unloading areas near the assigned building and directs vehicles to longer-term parking in the Blue Zone after unloading. First-year and returning-student parking directions should be taken from their own current instructions rather than borrowed from the transfer procedure.

Undergraduate students are generally required to live on campus for three academic years, or six semesters. Juniors seeking to live off campus must follow Duke’s release or lottery process and are advised not to sign a private lease until they have received formal permission to live off campus.

Typical Duke rooms include a bed, dresser, desk, desk chair and closet or wardrobe, but room configurations differ. Most residence-hall mattresses are Twin XL, while some upperclass locations have other mattress sizes. Students may bring personal furniture within housing rules, but it must be removed when they leave.

Duke’s prohibited-item guidance restricts personal air conditioners and heaters, open flames, hoverboards, weapons, certain lighting and other fire or safety hazards. Large furniture should not be purchased until the student understands the actual room size and building access.

Early arrival is managed through a separate request and approval process. Athletes, international students and participants in approved programs should follow the instructions from the sponsoring department and Housing and Residence Life rather than arriving early without authorization.

The official public pages reviewed did not provide one comprehensive elevator list, one cart policy or universal permission for commercial movers across all Duke housing. Before sending a moving truck, confirm the assigned building, campus area, vehicle size, entry route, parking destination, stair or elevator access and crew-entry policy with Duke Housing and Residence Life and Duke Parking and Transportation.

Duke’s spring 2026 housing calendar listed a May 4 residence-hall closing, an approved extended-stay period and a transition into summer housing. Future dates must be checked against the current annual calendar.

Graduate and professional students have a different housing process. Duke’s official planning guidance encourages housing research in spring, lease selection before summer and utility and furniture setup during the summer. University-provided graduate housing includes specific communities, while other students use private rentals and Duke’s off-campus resources.

UNC–Chapel Hill move-in

UNC’s fall 2026 move-in period runs from August 12 through August 16, and all residents must schedule a move-in appointment through the Housing Portal. The university says students should arrive during the scheduled period, with housing staff available to direct them.

The first stop is the Community Office assigned to the student’s housing community. The student must present a photo ID, complete a registration card and provide emergency-contact information. To receive a key, the student must be registered for classes and have relevant student-account holds resolved. Only after check-in should unloading into the room begin.

UNC publishes a community-by-community table showing the appropriate key-pickup location. For example, residents of several halls check in at a nearby service desk rather than directly inside their assigned hall. Those assignments can change, and Carolina Housing says affected students will receive updated communication.

The current public move-in page links to a fall 2026 guide. Families should use that guide and the student’s direct email for residence-hall routes, unloading areas and vehicle relocation. A single town or campus parking instruction should not be assumed to work for every building. UNC-controlled parking is governed by UNC Transportation and Parking; Town of Chapel Hill rules apply to town-controlled streets and spaces.

Every Carolina Housing room includes a Twin XL bed and mattress, dresser, desk and chair, wardrobe or closet, wireless internet and a recycling bin. Some buildings have built-in furniture, and dimensions are published on the specific hall pages.

UNC advises students to coordinate with roommates and not purchase everything before seeing the room. Its 2026 packing article recommends practical moving bags and confirms Twin XL bedding while noting that shared items such as a microwave should not be duplicated.

All first-year students are required to live on campus in a residence hall or at Granville Towers, which is affiliated with but separate from Carolina Housing and uses its own leasing process.

UNC’s room policies require residents to submit an Apartment/Room Condition Form after check-in. Damage not identified at the beginning of occupancy may later be charged to the student unless it qualifies as ordinary wear or a properly reported maintenance issue. First-year students are generally not permitted to park on campus unless an exception applies.

For spring 2026, residence halls closed on May 9, with students expected to leave within 24 hours of the final exam and graduating seniors permitted to remain through the separately published deadline. Checkout required removing belongings, cleaning the room, returning furniture and beds to the required configuration and submitting the key through the established process. Summer housing is available to eligible students enrolled in summer courses through a separate application.

The current public pages did not establish a universal cart guarantee, commercial-mover-entry policy or comprehensive elevator list. Students using professional movers should obtain building-specific approval from Carolina Housing and current access instructions from UNC Transportation and Parking.

How on-campus dorm moves differ from off-campus apartments

For a private apartment, request the complete move-in policy in writing. Ask about the elevator, loading dock, gate, approved hours, truck clearance, certificate of insurance, access cards, parking and cardboard disposal. A resident parking deck should never be assumed to fit a moving truck. The car may be permitted to enter while the truck must remain at street level or use a service entrance. Send the moving company the posted clearance and a photograph of the entrance.

Private-apartment rules do not become university rules simply because a building is marketed to students. Likewise, Raleigh’s right-of-way requirements do not control a private lot in Durham or a UNC-owned lot in Chapel Hill. Raleigh directs moving-van parking-pass requests to Raleigh Parking when public spaces are involved. Durham requires a right-of-way temporary-closure process when activity occupies public on-street parking or another part of the public right-of-way. Chapel Hill parking questions should be directed to Town Parking Services when town-controlled space is involved.

What not to buy until the student sees the room

Wait before purchasing:

• Extra chairs, shelving or drawer units
• A large desk or dresser
• Oversized rugs
• A second refrigerator or microwave
• A television and large stand
• Large kitchen equipment
• A full semester’s worth of bulky supplies
• Decorative items that interfere with sprinklers, doors or ventilation
• Appliances not approved by the school
• More clothing than the actual closet can hold

The student should first check the exact hall page, furniture list, bed size and prohibited-item policy. NC State, Meredith, Duke, UNC and William Peace all publish room or furniture information, but the details are not uniform across schools or even across buildings at the same institution.

Packing for a Triangle college move

Label every container on the side with:

• Student’s name
• School
• Residence hall or apartment
• Building
• Room or unit number
• Student’s phone number
• General contents

Use stackable containers where practical. Clear plastic bins or heavy-duty moving bags can be useful for items that may be exposed briefly to rain, while well-constructed cardboard boxes remain suitable for books and many household items. Avoid overloading a large box simply because it has room.

Pack these separately in the student’s personal vehicle or carry-on bag:

• Student ID and driver’s license
• Housing appointment and assignment
• Financial or registration confirmations
• Medication
• Medical devices
• Phone, laptop and chargers
• Keys and access instructions
• One change of clothing
• Toiletries
• Bedding
• Basic cleaning supplies
• Water and snacks
• A small toolkit

Do not place critical medication in a parked moving truck or hot vehicle. CDC guidance specifically warns that heat can damage insulin, certain medicines, glucose-monitoring equipment and testing supplies. Students should follow each medication’s storage directions and consult a pharmacist when needed.

Raleigh and Triangle heat, rain and traffic

College move-in occurs during one of the Triangle’s warmer periods. Raleigh-Durham climate normals show average daily highs near the upper 80s during the middle of August, with measurable precipitation possible on any given day.

Plan for:

• Water available before unloading begins
• Light, practical clothing and closed-toe shoes
• Work periods followed by cooling breaks
• A tarp or waterproof cover for bedding
• Plastic protection for electronics
• Towels for wet cart wheels and floors
• Boxes that will not fail when damp
• A weather check before departure
• Extra travel time near the campus
• A safe indoor or enclosed-vehicle shelter plan for thunderstorms

If thunder is heard, stop outdoor unloading and move into a substantial building or enclosed metal-topped vehicle. National Weather Service guidance says no outdoor location is safe while a thunderstorm is in the area and recommends remaining sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.

Campus traffic controls may temporarily reverse a road, close an ordinary entrance or direct vehicles through an unfamiliar route. Use the current official map rather than assuming the route used during a campus tour will remain open on move-in day.

When student storage makes sense

Storage can solve several common calendar problems:

• The residence hall closes for summer
• The student studies abroad
• The current lease ends before the next one starts
• A new apartment is not ready
• The student changes roommates or units
• The family is flying rather than driving
• The student has an internship in another city
• Furniture is needed next year but not in the current dorm
• Graduation occurs before permanent housing begins

A self-storage arrangement generally means the student or family handles transportation, loading and retrieval. Mover-managed storage combines pickup, warehouse storage and later delivery. <a href="https://johnsmoving.com/our-services/secure-storage-solutions/">John’s secure storage page</a> describes flexible short- and long-term storage and an option in which the company packs or loads, transports the items to its facility and delivers them when the customer is ready. Exact student pricing, minimum terms, access procedures and prohibited items should be confirmed in the estimate.

Reserve storage before spring move-out or late-summer lease turnover. Waiting until the last examination period can leave few practical choices.

Out-of-state and international students

A student arriving by air should keep the first several days of essentials in carry-on luggage. Ship or move only items permitted by the residence hall and schedule deliveries no earlier than the school allows. NC State warns that service desks may not be ready to receive packages before move-in, while UNC asks students to wait until move-in week when its package centers are prepared for deliveries.

Do not assume the student can enter campus housing early because the flight is less expensive on another date. Early arrival generally requires approval, and schools may have separate arrangements for international orientation, athletics, leadership programs or other approved groups.

For an off-campus apartment, confirm before flying:

• Key-pickup hours
• Whether the lease can be signed electronically
• Whether a guarantor must complete documents
• Whether utilities must be active before occupancy
• Whether furniture deliveries can arrive without the student
• Whether temporary lodging is needed
• Whether the building accepts packages
• Whether a local contact can meet a mover or delivery company

Purchasing some inexpensive necessities after arrival can be more practical than shipping a duplicate room’s worth of items across the country.

Student, parent and mover roles

Do not send every helper inside at once. One person should remain with the vehicle whenever the school or property expects active unloading. That person can also relocate the vehicle as soon as the temporary unloading phase is complete.

What to send the moving company

Send one organized message containing:

• Student’s full name and phone number
• Parent or backup contact
• School or private-property name
• Full street address
• Residence hall, building and room
• Move-in date and assigned period
• Check-in location
• Approved vehicle route
• Unloading location
• Post-unloading parking location
• Truck height or length restrictions
• Gate code or access-card procedure
• Elevator availability and reservation
• Number of stair flights
• Distance from truck to room
• Furniture inventory
• Items requiring disassembly
• Apartment COI instructions
• Property-manager or housing contact
• Storage pickup and redelivery dates
• Items returning to the family home

Photographs or a short video of a private apartment’s garage entrance, loading dock, elevator and hallway can prevent misunderstandings.

College moving-day checklist

Before leaving for campus, confirm that:

• The student has identification.
• The housing assignment and appointment are saved.
• The correct check-in location is known.
• Student-account holds have been resolved.
• The approved vehicle route is downloaded.
• The unloading and later parking locations are known.
• The roommate has been contacted.
• Water and rain protection are accessible.
• The cart or hand truck is packed.
• Medication is in the personal vehicle.
• Electronics are protected and kept separate.
• All containers are labeled.
• Basic tools and cleaning supplies are accessible.
• The apartment COI has been approved, if required.
• Someone will remain with the vehicle.
• The family knows where cardboard and unwanted items go.

Common mistakes that delay college moves

Following the ordinary campus route. Move-in traffic may use a temporary entrance or one-way system.

Arriving outside the appointment. A student may be turned away, delayed or directed to a different check-in process.

Unloading before receiving the key. At UNC and other institutions with check-in requirements, the student must complete the designated process before moving into the room.

Leaving the vehicle unattended. Temporary unloading areas depend on vehicles moving promptly.

Assuming a cart will be waiting. Bring one unless the school explicitly guarantees assistance.

Assuming every building has an elevator. NC State and William Peace both publish building-level differences.

Packing medicine in the truck. It may become inaccessible or exposed to damaging temperatures.

Buying duplicate furniture. Coordinate with the roommate and check what the room already includes.

Assuming movers are automatically permitted. Obtain school or building approval for the exact crew, vehicle and residence hall.

Ignoring the apartment’s COI or elevator requirement. Private student apartments can follow the same controlled-access procedures as other managed apartment buildings.

Forgetting a lease gap. Confirm the current lease end date, the next possession date and where belongings will go in between.

Leaving furniture beside a dumpster. City or town collection is not automatically available to an apartment resident, and private properties may charge for unauthorized disposal.

Waiting until August to reserve help. School appointments and lease turnover concentrate many moves into a small number of dates.

End-of-year move-out

Begin planning before final exams.

Confirm:

• The residence-hall closing or lease expiration
• Whether the student must leave within 24 hours of the final exam
• Graduation exceptions
• Late-stay approval
• Cleaning standards
• Key-return procedure
• Room inspection
• Bed and furniture configuration
• Donation opportunities
• Cardboard and trash locations
• Storage pickup
• Summer sublease terms
• Utility shutoff or transfer
• Security-deposit documentation
• Forwarding address

UNC currently requires residents to remove belongings, clean the space, restore furniture and beds and return the key through the approved process. NC State also ties departure timing to final examinations and the published closing date.

Municipal disposal rules differ. Raleigh’s bulky-item program is a requested, fee-based service for eligible City customers and does not accept recyclable cardboard as a bulky or special load. Durham’s curbside bulky service is request-based, and most large apartment communities do not receive the same City recycling service as small residential properties. Chapel Hill charges for requested bulky-item pickup, while Orange County provides separate multi-unit recycling and cardboard resources.

Ask the school or apartment before setting anything outside. A sofa beside a private dumpster is not automatically scheduled for municipal collection.
